FLAG ENGLISH :

Below is a list of surnames brought to the Bulkley Valley of west central British Columbia by Swiss settlers. The Bulkley Valley includes the communities of Smithers, Houston and Telkwa. It is a working list, subject to additions and revisions : your comments are welcome !

A few Swiss pioneers came to the then relatively wild and sparsely populated Bulkley Valley in the early decades of the 20th century, mostly to farm the new lands that were made economically accessible by the building of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In 1935 an official "Swiss Settlement Delegation", after a study of various parts of Canada, recommended British Columbia as an attractive area for Swiss settlement with the result that the valley received many new Swiss settlers in the late 1930s. Following the Second World War, Swiss again came to build new lives in the Bulkley Valley. However, since the 1960s, Swiss migration to this area has slowed to a trickle.

Listed are the surname, place of citizenship ("Bürgerort") with Canton of origin (will be correct in most cases, but questionable in a few cases). In the last column there are some additional remarks :
- comments on present Swiss spelling
- in questionable cases the Cantons mentioned in Familiennamenbuch ("a" only, indicated by FN(a):)
- if contained in the Billeter Collection (indicated by B:) the first year of mention.

If you have any further questions regarding this list, contact Tony L'Orsa .

FLAG DEUTSCH :
