In 1833 Basel was divided into Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. In 1994 the Laufental district (formerly canton Bern) joined Basel-Landschaft, which since then consists of 86 communities. The majority, but not all church records have been filmed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A full list of all parishes and church records is found on the State Archive web pages, which also contains background information on church registers and civil registry data (more detailed in German).

For civil registry data (after 1876) one of the nine (to be reduced to six on 31 Dec 2003) Civil Registry Offices have to be contacted: check the list of communities to find out which Office is the one responsible for any given community.
